If a particular page on a website doesn't load for some reason or in case a link is broken, the site visitor will see an error page with a generic message. The page will have nothing in common with the rest of the website, that may make the visitor leave your website. A likely solution in this case is a feature offered by some website hosting service providers - the ability to set up your own personalized error pages that shall have exactly the same design as your website and which could contain any images or text you want based on the particular error. There are 4 well-known errors which can take place and they involve the following so-called HTTP status codes - 400, when your browser sends a bad request to the web server and it can't be processed; 401, in case you are supposed to log in to see some page, but you haven't done so yet; 403, if you do not have an authorization to view a particular page; and 404, when a link which you've clicked leads to a file which doesn't exist. In any of these situations, website visitors shall be able to see your personalized content as opposed to a generic error page.

Custom Error Pages in Shared Website Hosting

You can set up customized error pages for any of your websites easily when you use any of our shared website hosting plans. This could be done via the Hosted Domains part of the Hepsia Control Panel, offered with all accounts and once you go there, you could set your custom pages independently for any domain or subdomain. You should upload the files to your account in advance and enter the links to them through the process. This feature can be de-activated at any time and the options you'll be able to pick from are a generic page from our system or a default Apache server page. Custom error pages can be set with an .htaccess file as well. The file should be put into the domain or subdomain folder and it should include some system code and links to the pages. If you are not tech-savvy, you could copy the entire content you'll need for the file from our Help section.

Custom Error Pages in Semi-dedicated Servers

All of our semi-dedicated hosting plans support personalized error pages, so you'll be able to employ this function for any domain or subdomain hosted in your account. All it will take to do this is to navigate to the Hosted Domains section of the Hepsia CP, to click on the Edit button associated with the specific domain/subdomain and then to enter the link to the custom file. You'll be able to do this separately for every error type. You'll be able to switch back to a standard error page anytime if necessary and the change will take effect right away. An alternative way to achieve the exact same result is to place an .htaccess file inside the domain or subdomain folder associated with the web site which you'd like to modify and to enter a couple of lines of program code inside it. If you need to try this method, you could copy and paste the required code from our Knowledge Base article on custom error pages, thus you'll not need any programming skills or previous experience.
